Mother-of-pearl is the iridescent coating on the inside of oyster shells.

Black Mother of Pear:  This form has a deep gray to black coloring with occasional white sections. It also can exhibit a greenish color or a full rainbow. Black mother of pearl is most likely cut from a special black-lipped mollusk known as the pinctada margaritifera, or "black-lip mother of pearl" for short. It is found in French Polynesian waters and naturally secretes a black pigment that, depending on the quantity, gives a resulting color shading from black to white.
