MABE PEARL (pronounced mahbay) A type of cultured pearl that forms between the shell and tissue of a mollusk. When cut away from the shell it has an unfinished flat surface on the back that is polished. Mabe pearls are most commonly dome shaped like a cabochon.
Pearl is the official birthstone for the month of June. It is also the birthstone for the Sun Signs of Gemini and Cancer. Fresh water pearls are given on the 1st wedding anniversary. Pearls are also given on the 3rd, 12th and 30th anniversaries.
